Snow Festivals Guide 2012

It's getting close to that time of the season where something strange happens and instead of everyone panicking about snow fall and getting in as many powder runs as possible, their attention is drawn to the underlying necessity to have a ruddy good party.

This naturally occurring syndrome is know as snow festival-itus. A modern phenomenon that upgrades the apres session into a week long celebration of Glühwein, snow, music and everything else fun that can be done at altitude, the snow festival is now a staple of any decent resort and here is our guide to the best ones coming up in 2012.

First up -

VANS Wangl Tangl

The 10th Anniversary of the event with best name out there, Wangl Tangl takes place in Mayrhofen, Austria from the 17 - 24 March and has it all really; snowboard and skateboard contests featuring team battles made up of proper professionals, loads of live music, special art collections and everything else associated and celebrated within the culture of coolness.

With Vans at the helm and M.O.P playing on the last night as part of the Open Air Hip Hop Night along with Roots Manuva and Blak Twang, you can be sure that it’s going to be a birthday party to remember. ANTE UP!

The Brits 2012

A classic on the circuit and funnily enough a firm favorite amongst the GB riders and seasonaires, The Brits takes place in Laax, Switzerland from March 18 - 25 and sees the winning combo of British people on holiday, plenty of booze, snowboarding and skiing, some big music headline acts and the need to wear fancy dress all in one place.

This year you can go along and not only see some amazing action from the UK’s best skiers and snowboarders as they battle for some TTR points (it’s a 3Star event), but they’ve got DJ Yoda, DJ Cheeba, Mr Thing, a punk party and some other musical treats in store for those who plan on going.

Basscamp Festival

What with it’s plethora of snowparks, off piste, connected resorts and a local beer that gets you drunk like no other, Morzine is a fine choice for a snow festival and the guys behind Basscamp aren’t messing about.

Firstly, they’ve gone all out on the music front; they’ve booked a medley of legendary dance/drum and bass DJs (arguably the snow scenes premier choice of music) and are shipping over the massive DIRT Sound System from the UK to make sure that every party is ridiculously well catered for in the bass department. In terms of proper festival music standards, basscamp leads the charge (plus the week culminates in an 80‘s themed street party).
What’s not to love!

Snowbombing 2012

This year will be the thirteenth Snowbombing and over those years it has elevated itself to one of the major players in the boutique festival game.

Back once again in Mayrhofen from the 9 - 14 April and boasting a line up of mega-artists including Dizzee Rascal, Chase and Status and FatBoy Slim, Snowbombing seems like the perfect end to what many are claiming to be the best season for the last decade. Might as well go out with a bang! (Bang. Bomb. Genius)

WSSF 2012

Outside of Europe, the aptly titled World Ski & Snowboard Festival is a good looking event for all those with a bit of money to splash on an end of season knees up.

Taking place in the haven of all things radical that is Whistler, not only is the WSSF a 5Star TTR event (the Monster Shred Snow) with slopestyle and hip events, but there's a whole world of music and art taking place over the course of the festival (13 - 22 April), including a silent disco, some photography and video editing competitions and a final party simply called The END.
