James Woods wins ski slopestyle in New Zealand

British slopestyle skier James ‘Woodsy’ Woods topped the podium at The North Face Freeski Open in New Zealand on Monday to start his winter season in style.

It might only be August, but some of the world’s best freeskiers headed to Wanaka to get ready for another winter of competition in perfect conditions at Cardrona.

New Zealand’s own Jossi Wells qualified first but, after snowfall delayed the finals for 24 hours, he could only manage second behind Woods in a tight contest.

The skier from Sheffield in the UK posted a top score of 94, just 1.5 points above Wells, while Swiss skier Elias Ambuhl rounded off the podium in third.

In the women’s event, Keri Herman finished first, ahead of her fellow American Jackie King.

Earlier in the event Taylor Seaton took the top spot in the men’s halfpipe with Kiwi Janina Kuzma winning the women’s contest, while the Big Mountain event is still to come.
