The California Supercross event will be held at the United States Olympic Committee Training Centre in Chula Vista. The track is a challenging, spiced up replica of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games track and is a favourite amongst the world’s Elite.
The 2011 BMX World Champion Joris Daudet (FRA) is currently leading the World Cup series and will not back down an inch in his bid to add the Supercross title to his World and European titles.
However, he is only a few points ahead of New Zealander Marc Willers, who won rounds two and three of the Supercross in Papendal (NED) and in London (GBR) on the 2012 Olympic track. Other favourites include Sam Willoughby (AUS) and Maris Strombergs (LAT). Not to be overlooked is the young American Connor Fields, who has just recovered from injury and has showed good form by making it to the finals of the last two rounds. He will be particularly motivated in front of his home crowd.
In the women’s competition, the big favourite has to be Sarah Walker (NZL), who currently has a comfortable lead in the overall standings. Her main challengers will very likely come from the French team: look out for Manon Valentino, who won this year’s first Supercross stop in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Valentino’s teammate Magalie Pottier claimed the bronze medal at the UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen and is second behind Walker in the overall Supercross standings.
However, they will all have to contend with World Champion Marianna Pajon (COL), who will want to improve on her London performance, where she crashed in the final.
